When my clients first moved into their tri-level townhouse in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, it had the cutting-edge minimalist look of their dreams. Flash forward almost thirty years and the kitchen was in dire need of renovation. The first step was a complete demo of the once white, now yellowing cabinets, the dull floor tile and the flow-constricting peninsula which divided the kitchen into two disjointed sections. To set the stage for the new kitchen, 12” x 24” porcelain tile in light gray to charcoal tones were laid in a modern, stacked pattern. Thermofoil cabinets in brushed silver were selected for their sleek style, metallic sheen and durability. Minimalistic, easy-to-care-for quartz countertops in an almost white gray tone were paired with a streamlined, single-bowl Kohler sink in soft gray. A mosaic backsplash created from a mix of glass and stone tiles is a stunning focal point. Hand-blown glass pendants add an artisanal touch to the new center island. A buffet with a blue glass countertop and backsplash adds elegance and functionality to the breakfast area. The new kitchen is now one large open flowing space complete with an island and breakfast area. With the renovation complete, the outdated ‘80s kitchen is once again a modern showpiece.
