Contemplating moving to a larger house, but wanting to stay in Lincoln Park, my clients were stuck in indecision. Built in the early 90’s, the 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath duplex had a nice layout, high ceilings and plenty of light, but it was in need of complete updating and space planning. After gathering quotes and researching home values in the neighborhood, it was determined that investing in built-in cabinetry, a kitchen renovation, re-staining the floors, painting and replacing all the lighting, would greatly improve the function and beauty of the home. The best scenario was to stay put in the neighborhood they desired and renovate their duplex for the long term.
Additional storage and organization was the main goal and the key to a smoothly running operation in this busy household of working parents and young children with many activities. To update the house, they chose a transitional style consisting of clean lines, neutral gray tones, soothing blue accents and dark wood floors. Materials would be specified based on durability, low maintenance and safety, due to the high traffic in this part of the home.
To make the best use of the space, custom built-in cabinetry was utilized along the fireplace wall and includes bench seating, display space, a serving bar, ample storage and a spot for the TV.
The kitchen features gray painted shaker cabinets, quartz countertops, blue glass tile, a Subzero refrigerator/freezer and a Wolf range. The peninsula was extended to make room for a pull-out trash can and to provide seating for four.
As is typical in city homes, there is never enough closet space, especially in the master bedroom. To solve this problem, a custom built-in clothing storage unit was designed to include drawers, hanging bars, shelves and a place to mount the TV.
This Lincoln Park Duplex is now an updated, beautiful space which functions perfectly for this active family. The investment made will provide them with many years of happy living!
