An avid reader asked me to create a dedicated place in the family room to showcase her treasured book collection. Immediately, I spotted an opportunity around the fireplace where under utilized space could be repurposed with the addition of storage and shelving. Custom cabinetry in a warm, rich natural walnut wood maximized the use of every available inch. By mounting the cabinets on the wall, floor space was freed, creating a clean updated appearance. Floating shelves, which require no unsightly mounting hardware, installed above the cabinets add to the fresh, sleek, modern look. Updating the fireplace surround with travertine tile provides texture and interest. My final touch was to mount a shelf above the fireplace on which to place artwork. With a few simple changes, I not only gave my client a place devoted to her books, but transformed the family room with a stunning new focal point.
